The Illusionist's Meixin is going places

The Illusionist's Meixin is going places

Have we been missing out on a lot?

Local actress Meixin might appear to be an up-and-coming new face on local TV with her role in new Channel U drama The Illusionist, but it turned out things are incredibly rosy abroad for the young lass.

Besides starring opposite heartthrob Thomas Ong in the serial, she's also making a name for herself in the regional entertainment circles. Just yesterday, the 23-year-old officially became a student of top Chinese comedian Zhao Benshan.

Meixin flew out to the Chinese city of Shenyang on Tuesday for an elaborate seven-step ceremony where Zhao officially accepted the Singaporean as the latest of his 45 thespian pupils - and the first one based overseas, no less.

According to Meixin who joined the industry in 2007 as a singer, the Chinese actor-director picked her for her potential. They first crossed paths two years ago after the Sichuan earthquake, when Meixin became one of the first Singaporean celebrities to fly to Mainland China to help raise funds for victims. In no time, she was the lead actress in his drama production, Guandong Master.

From then on, she has constantly been on the move. After being invited to a year-end gala dinner in Taiwan, she recently took part in Liaoning's mega Lunar New Year event. Her management added that talks are currently going on for her to star in a Taiwanese idol drama.

During filming for The Illusionist, director Canter Chia noticed a major improvement in the pretty star after she took time off to visit Zhao, who was a 2007 Golden Horse Awards' Best Actor nominee.

The golden advice, as revealed by Meixin, was simply to not be nervous in front of the camera.

The singer-actress will not be relinquishing her first love though. After her first single in 2007, she will soon release a full album.

On the meeting with Zhao, which led one thing to another, Meixin would only gush, "I guess it's fate."
